One of those products that we've found to be incredibly useful is SONAX's Wheel Cleaner Full Effect.
Cleaning your wheels can be a boring, arduous task. When it comes time to wash your car, most people just give the outside of the wheel a quick clean and call it a day, completely neglecting the inside of the wheel.
Over time, all that road grime, and even worse, brake dust, builds up, like it did on the wheels of this 2001 Mercedes Benz E320 we have just received.
Can SONAX take off 80,000+ miles of brake dust and road dirt?
Products used/mentioned today:
SONAX Wheel Cleaner Full Effect
Schnell Autosports' Industrial Strength Swab Pack - 325pc.
AERO Shine Speed Wax
Here's a few more pictures showing just how caked on the brake dust is. It was so bad in fact, that we mulled over whether or not the wheels were painted black to begin with.
These scalloped areas were probably the dirtiest parts. |
Freshly applied SONAX is a neon green/yellow color. Like that outfit from the 80's you hide in your closet. |
When SONAX reacts with brake dust, it goes from it's neon color, to a dark puple, letting you know that it's broken down the particles. Once it turns purple, it's time to give the wheel a good scrubbing with a brush to remove the loosened dirt and debris.
This wheel was so dirty that it was hard to see the color change. |
This is what we're left with after spraying the wheel down:
This wheel was in fact, silver. |
Worlds better than what we started with. As this wheel had gone so long without being cleaned, some of the brake dust and dirt was caked on so thick that SONAX and scrubbing wasn't able to get it off on the first go.
Most people would stop here and call it job done. We aren't most people.
After drying the wheel off (which also removed more of the dirt that the first spraying had dislodged, but not taken off), the wheel was given a second application of SONAX and allowed to sit, as before.
With less junk in the way, you can get a better view of how SONAX reacts to brake dust. |
And after all is said and done, you're left with this, a wheel that only needs to be given a final wipedown with our speed wax of choice.
